In a world where many adults still feel they "fell into" their lives, undecided on what to do in their mid life and even in their 60s, we can prepare children lifelong skills to equip them to create their dreams and a life they love.
When learning feels relevant to personal dreams, children show up more motivated. This can improve classroom behavior, grades, personal confidence and better alignment to their strengths.
Schools incorporating dedicated classes to help students discover their dreams, passions, strengths, and potential career paths is one of the most practical and humane improvements we can make to education.
Far too many young adults leave high school or college feeling lost, unsure of what they want, drifting between jobs, regretting majors, or struggling with motivation and mental health. Career indecision and lack of purpose contribute to higher dropout rates, lower engagement in school, regret over choices, and even long-term dissatisfaction in work and life.
It would be so wonderful for elementary and middle schools to have classes every 6 months to assist children in exploring their dreams and advise any adjustment in their electives.
Self-assessments and reflection ~ Tools for interests, strengths, values (e.g., quizzes that match students to career clusters).
Exposure to real options ~ Learning about diverse jobs (not just the obvious ones like doctor or teacher), including trades, entrepreneurship, creative fields. Guest speaks and simulation help.
Hands-on projects ~ "Passion projects," Genius Hour, or individualized learning plans where students pursue something they're genuinely excited about ~ building a prototype, researching a topic, starting a small initiative, or creating art/portfolio work.
Planning and goal-setting ~ Connecting current classes to future dreams, creating roadmaps for high school, college, apprenticeships, or direct workforce entry.
Skill-building ~ Problem-solving, communication, and building resilience through the life choices they make
