When we walk through a quiet forest, we may think we are surrounded by solitary, silent trees. Trees are more active and alive than they look.
Trees connect to each other using an intricate web of underground fungi called mycorrhizal networks.
The Fungal Threads: Tiny, thread-like fungi wrap around tree roots, linking separate trees together across miles of forest floor.
The Mutual Trade: Trees feed the fungi carbon and sugar; in return, the fungi supply the trees with essential nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen.
Massive Scale: A single footstep in a healthy forest can walk over hundreds of miles of these tiny fungal communication lines.
Resource Sharing: Older, taller trees use the network to pump vital sugars to young saplings growing in the shade, helping them survive.
Nurturing the Sick: When a tree is dying, it frequently dumps its remaining resources back into the network so its neighbors can inherit the nutrients.
