Have you ever watched someone do something and felt a sudden, sharp jolt of recognition?
Maybe you saw a friend constantly interrupt people, a coworker get defensive over minor feedback, or a family member scrolling endlessly on their phone instead of engaging. Suddenly, it hits you like a flash of lightning: “Oooops. I do that exact same thing.”
This is the power of The Mirror Effect.
Often, our own habits are completely invisible to us. We live inside our own heads, so our behaviors just feel like "the way we are." But when we see those same actions played out by someone else, the blind spots vanish. We finally see the habit clearly and it gives us a rare, beautiful opportunity to change.
We judge ourselves by our intentions, but we judge others by their behavior.
Our internal view: When we rush through a conversation or snap at someone, we excuse it because we know we are tired or stressed.
The external view: When we see someone else do it, we see the actual impact of the action without the messy web of excuses.
Observe and transform:
The next time someone else’s habit catches your attention, use it to upgrade yourself. Here is how to take that observation and turn it into real, encouraging change:
Pause and reflect: Instead of thinking, "Wow, they are annoying," ask yourself, "Do I show up that way in my own life?"
